Hi All on LCI! Hope the Spring is arriving sooner than later for all of you there! Love the pics of the Winter Wonderland. Makes me feel very "home sick". Annabella, you might not remember me from when we were kids, but I still want to wish you CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW BABY!!! My Family and I are still in Connecticut. And, still wishing we had a way of making it possible to move there. Maybe someday. All of you take care. Blessings to all of you.

This wonderful event is organized and sponsered by the GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis).   The money is collected by them and they pass it on to Ubuntu and all the other groups doing the walk.

This is a perfect opportunity to support the work of Ubuntu with children in South Africa and do a bit of exercise.

Ice storm last night and today. Wind gusts of 60 miles an hour expected by 10:00 A.M. The morning boat was cancelled for Islesford. A layer of ice on everything outside the window. The power has flickered in and out several times this morning. Hunker down!

Love the winter photos. Looks beautiful as we are finally getting our first substantial snow in NYC today.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we are having a great time with our 3 month old baby girl - Eleanor. She was born on Nov. 17th - weighing 8 lbs 8 oz and 22 inches long. Everyone was fine at birth and Annabella and Eleanor got to come home about 10 hours after.

It has been a blissful past three months getting to know Eleanor. She has a great sense of humor evidenced by her laughing at our jokes.

Looking forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Best John, Annabella and Eleanor

Hi, my name is Sarah Noble-Dziura, I am 18 years old and live in a little town in western Massachusetts. I have been coming to LCI for the past 17 years ,with my mom, as a 'day tripper' a couple of times each summer, and like so many others I have found it to be a magical place. There is so much that is compelling about the Island and your community.

For my senior year independent project I would like to spend 4 or 5 days in February on Little Cranberry Island, interviewing and photographing six or seven year-round residents in order to produce a photo essay that addresses the question: 'Why, in the 21st century, would 70 + people choose to live year-round on a tiny, isolated island, 3 miles off the coast of Maine, only 1 1/2 miles long and 3/4 miles wide?'

I don't know anyone on LCI, and was wondering if there might be someone who would be willing to 'host' me, ideally from February 16-20, or any other time in Feb or March that would be convenient. I would be happy to pay room and board (and bring maple syrup produced in my town?)

If you are willing to help me in any way, either be willing to be interviewed and photographed, or help me to find a 'host', please email me at: snoble@charlemont.org or write to me at: Sarah Noble-Dziura, 2 Hidden Ledge Drive, Conway, Ma 01341

Thank you.

Hi Everyone. I wanted to check in and say hi! We are back in CT. And pretty sad about it too. My Daughter, Mariah, started school here on Wed., very reluctantly. She was really looking forward to beginning her school year at Islesford School. She has made sure to tell any of her friends here and teachers (pretty much anyone with ears!) all about Islesford - her experiences during our vacation, the new friends she made (Hannah, Sam, Hauni, and Casey), meeting the Islesford teachers (and how 'really cool and nice' they are), and in general that, 'Maine Rocks!' My Son, Gavin, asks me at least once a day since we got back 'where is our boathouse, Mommy?' and 'when are we going back to our boathouse?' As for me, I just want to say that I am seriously considering printing up bumper stickers that read, "The more I meet people in Ct., the more I want to be with the people of Islesford!' It's just not the same here in rat-race, stressed out Ct., let me tell you! Still working on getting back up there. Blessings to All of You! Don't forget to keep in touch!

Our father, a long time island friend, resident and supporter passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 1, 2007. He was blessed by 60 years of marriage to his wife Molly, who he leaves loved and cared for by numerous family members and friends. She can be reached via mail at:

Molly Bowditch
15 Piper Shore Road
Unit C-302
Scarborough, ME 04074.

Dad spent some of the best times of his life on "the point" and as many of you know felt a special bond with the land, sea and people surrounding and living on the Cranberry Isles. A beautiful service was held this past Friday, August 17, in Cape Elizabeth at St. Alban's Church attended by The Venerable Audrey Delafield and celebrated by family members including his wife, four children, an older brother Nathaniel and grandchildren, friends and past co-workers.

While his passing was expected I know I speak for the family when I say he will be greatly missed. To those of you lucky enough to have known him, please take a moment to walk out to the point sometime, sit on the rest bench and keep him in your thoughts while you relax in the cool space in the forest.

Hello from Belgium!

As many of you know, I have been selected to be a part of the Blue Planet Run (www.blueplanetrun.org), an international team of 20 runners who is running around the clock and around the globe to raise awareness and funds to improve access to safe drinking water.
About the Blue Planet Run: The 2007 Blue Planet Run is covering 15,200 miles, across 16 countries and 4 continents, 24 hours a day for 95 days to deliver an extremely urgent and important message: we can and must address access to safe drinking water to the 1.2 billion people who lack access.. The relay, which will be sponsored by the Dow, is a metaphor for what needs to happen in the water sector – a nonstop marathon-sprint involving the entire international community.

The Route: Since taking off in style on June 1st from the steps of the UN – the team has run over 1,500 miles from New York to Boston, across Ireland, the UK and France. Passing our baton, which carries the message "Water is Life," we have personally reached tens of thousands of people in every town and venue we pass through: from the UN headquarters to gas stations along US Rt 1 to small-town festivals to British pubs. You can follow me along the route at blueplanetrun.org and read some of my blog entries at www.blueplanetrun.org/node/96.

Recent Highlights: The trip has been full of unbelievable experiences and events. Some highlights from the past week include:
• A successful launch at the UN with academy award winning actress Hilary Swank;
• An appearance on the Today Show (NBC) and great coverage and interviews on hundreds of international and local media outlets;
• The Sneakers and the City: celebrity designed sneaker statuettes - (Courtney Cox and David Arquette designed a statue in honor of me, on display at the UN). • A great reception at the River Festival in Norwich, CT (June 2);
• Beautiful roads and running paths in New England, Ireland, and the UK (particularly my route through Snowdonia National Park).
• Running through Paris – around the Arch de Triumph, under the Tour Eiffel, and past the Louvre.
• Overwhelming support, interest and compassion - in the most unsuspecting places.

Raising Funds: Because of Dow's sponsorship, 100% of every dollar raised will go directly to high-impact water projects. My personal goal: help raise $1 for each stride. $27.5 million in 95 days.

What YOU Can Do: Achieving this goal will require your involvement. There are a myriad of ways which you can be a part of this adventure. Donate via www.blueplanetrun.org. Host a fundraiser. Volunteer. Attend a hand-off event. Invite at least 10 friends to join us along the route. Mobilize your workplace and staff.

Hello all,
I just wanted to say that I just caught the Dinner Impossable show for the first time on April 25th. I know better late than never. Great job to all who volenteered and all who gave money to the fire department at the Island. I feel terrable that I wasn't there to contribute money and pig out on that great looking food. If any of you have any of the recipies for anything I would love to have them. I'll be around this spring and summer. Great job to all. On a sadder note, give our reguards to the Keegan family. We are so sorry for your loss.
See you all soon. -Sarah-

Sally McLendon Pitkin and Annabella and Rosie are saddened to announce that Sally's husband Bill Sturtevant died peacefully on Friday morning, March 2, at the age of 80. He had been the president of the American Anthropological Association, which has a very nice obituary posted on its website: www.aaanet.org/press/PR20070306.htm

Bill will be buried at the Sturtevant family home in Woods Hole, MA. There will be a memorial celebration of Bill's life and work at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the William C. Sturtevant Memorial Fund at the American Philosophical Society. Checks should be made out to the APS and identified as for the Sturtevant Memorial Fund, and sent to: 104 South 5th St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. The fund supports research in museum collections and archives pertaining to the peoples of the New World.

Hello again to everyone there on the great island of LCI. I'm currently reading "The Secret Life of Lobsters" by Trevor Corson (family friend Rich Moriarty suggested). A couple chapters in, and I felt I had to check into the Islesford website, and see how the Island and everyone on it is doing!

My divorce was finalized on Feb. 23rd. I'm still living with my two children in my Parents' home here in Monroe, CT. And, I'm still contemplating a move to Islesford... Anybody want to make room for a Islesford- loving lady with two good kids? Has anyone heard of any jobs on the Island, surrounding islands, or the mainland that I can look into? My Bday was in Feb. I'm now 35, and I have experience in many different career fields. I would also be interested in finding a place to rent, preferably on Islesford, but would be interested in places on other islands or the mainland - anything to be near Islesford.

Please don't hesitate to call me (203.331.2237) or email me (kmcalexander@gmail.com) if you hear of any job and/or place to rent! I would be truly interested in hearing about any and all opportunities! I'm currently working nights as part of the waitstaff at a local, upscale banquet hall in order to pay the bills. However, I really need to make up my mind and figure out what my long-term plan is - and soon. I hope all is well there on LCI. I miss the Island and its people so much. I wish all of you the best, always.

Sincerely, Kelley Keane-McAlexander

I have been accepted as volunteer-in-the-park at Acadia NP. I'll be working at the museum on Islseford. I would like to rent a small cabin that needs some tender loving care, but preferably one with running water. I'm familiar with the island because I worked there in 1998 when artifacts were moved to the new storage at Headquarters. I also did some parttime work there in 2000. I like your lovely island and would like to experience a summer there with you. Interested in water coloring painting.

I would consider trading homes for the summer. I live in the high country of CO at 10,000ft in a small, cozy 2 bedroon, one floor home two hours from Denver. Please contact for more info.

I caught a glimpse of your island on the Cooking Impossible Show this weekend. Your island looks like a wonderful place!

We live in Washington State in a group of islands called the San Juan Islands. Ours is the closest island to Anacortes ( a 5 minute ferry ride). Our little island of 850 full time residents is serviced by a little county ferry that holds only 22 cars. Our island is maybe somewhat similar to yours. A quaint, wonderful place free of the hustle and bustle of city life. But yet we are less than 2 hours from Seattle.

I would love to visit your island and would like to know if anyone would like to visit ours...maybe trade a 10 day stay??? We have a wonderful cottage right on the salt water. We would be amiable to discuss any opportunities that may be out there. My husband and I would love to visit the island and eat LOTS of lobster.

Warmly, Marla Hovey

Erin, Barbara, Barb, Marcie, Denise - You now have a career to fall back on when you give up your day jobs!
Bettina's cameo appearance made us smile, and we hooted with laughter at the young lady who was planning "to eat her brains out" ! Well done. For those of you who missed it , try to catch a rerun.

On Friday night, my children and I - all Islesford lovers - had dinner at Cafe Gray in New York City and delighted in seeing ŽIslesford LobsterŽon the menu.

I, too, savored its flavors as memories of dear Lucien and Ashley, the Coop, and so many kind people and unforgettable places washed over me.!

Well, I just had to have it and, of course, it was wonderful!

Although I never have been a resident to Ilesford, I feel I have a connection. My great-grandfather was William Otis Sawtelle - founder of the museum. I recall many summers visiting my grandmother, Louise Libby, while she worked in the museum. Of course, the Head was also in the family although I don't beleive I have ever had the honor of even entering the front door. I now have a family of my own but have not yet taken them on the journey to the Island. I am planning on doing so this summer. I just returned from Searsport/Bar Harbor and more specifically, Sonogee where my grand mother just celebrated her 100th birthday on January 20th!

I am a former summertime "resident" of Little Cranberry Island. I spent Summers there from the age of 2 yrs. to 10 yrs. old. I am now 34. Unfortunately, I have been back to visit very sporadically since the age of 10. I have kept in touch with my good friend Ashley Bryan over the years. I love the island, and its people. I miss it alot. I am currently going through a divorce. I live in Connecticut, but I am seriously considering moving. It would be a dream for me to relocate to Islesford. However, my finances are tight. I have two children, a 10 yr. old Daughter (Mariah), and a 3 yr. old Son (Gavin). I would love for them to be able to grow up in such a wonderful place like Little Cranberry Island. So, I was wondering...do you need employees? I have experience working for my Mom's catering business, waitressing, cocktail waitressing, and hostessing. I have no problem washing dishes, cleaning, mopping floors. And yes, I am very happy to "do windows"! If you do not have any jobs available, do you know of any available jobs on the Island?? I have experience in Medical Assisting/Medical Secretarial work, retail, real estate (just passed the course), and even Husbandry/Educational Docent work as a volunteer at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Are there any small apartments/cottages to rent? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to pass this email onto anyone on the Island that you feel may be interested or can give me info. If you need references, you can ask Ashley about me. I also know Mr. Richard Hill. His Daughter, "Sissy", and I were the best of friends when we were little. He might remember me as Rebecca Keane's Daughter or the family who rented Capt. Spurling's Cottage for years. You can also ask Cara Spurling about me and my family. I would have tried to contact her or Ashley, but I am pretty sure they do not get email. I plan to write to Ashley soon. I might try to send a copy of this to Mrs. Sue Hill.

I hope to hear from you soon. You can reach me at kmcalexander@gmail.com home phone: (203) 261-2669 cellphone: (203) 331-2237

We learned the sad news that a long time summer resident of Islesford, Feliks Gross, died at his home in New York at the age of 100. Feliks and his wife, Preva resided summers in their Islesford home, "Blue Gables". They both spent many hours in academic thought when they were here yet we all learned to know them and marveled at their stories of survival in Poland and then to America during Hitler's march on Jewish intelligencia. Burial will be in New York.

Last Sunday, my brother and I and our spouses had a great visit to Ilesford. It was a beautiful cool crisp sunny fall day, and I was so pleased because my brother and his wife from California really enjoyed the leaves, the fine pace of life, watching the lobstermen unload their catch at the dock, and the kindness of one and all whom we interacted with. We were actually trying to find the home of a dear friend of our parents - Betty Hartley. Both of us thought we'd remember her home, but our memories were not up to the task. Our parents went to visit Mrs. Hartley for many years, and we wondered if her family are still Islesford residents. They would remember me by my maiden name - Caroline Boardman.

Just a note to let people know that the Little Cranberry Yacht Club was well-represented at the Bull's Eye Nationals last weekend. Besides Drew and Kirby Sholl, Mike Taylor (skipper) and Danny Wriggins (crew) were there, and they won a trophy for a 5th place finish overall. They got off to a rocky start on the first day - Mike having been doing his NOAA internship in Alaska all summer, not sailing! - but in the two races on the second day they were 2nd and 3rd - pretty good, considering that the winner, Wendy Goodwin, is one of the owners of Cape Cod Shipbuilding, builders of the Bull's Eye! Southwest Harbor went all out, with a fantastic dinner at the Deck House. All in all, a great place to celebrate Mike's 21st birthday! Special thanks to Danny for being such an awesome crew....Mike says he couldn't have asked for a better partner!

What happened to the old coast guard station on Islesford? At one time, some relatives of mine owned it. Their last name was Bartheld. My parents, a friend, and I stayed with them in the summer of 1963 for a week. It was a beautiful old place, with one problem; it had one bathroom. The bathroom was also used to store firewood, and I think the room was about 20' long. Any information about the place would be welcome.

Hi folks,

Just an fyi that there is now a profile of my father on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_lake

Also, my web page about him is now up -- it is not yet complete but there is enough content there that I wanted to get going with it and continue to add material in the future. www.johnlake.com

Thanks, Eric

Hello.

I visited Little Cranberry Island for the first time this summer (August 2006)and was totally enchanted. I am a Waldorf teacher and a writer (woman, 58), and an idea was seeded during my visit to write a novel set on Little Cranberry Island, weaving in and elaborating upon some of the "characters" and stories I heard during the day (only a day!) I was there.

I want to come back for a longer time, at least a month or so no later than next fall, to absorb more of the island, the store, the school, the dock, the roads, and most of all, people.

Where can I stay, not too expensively? Can I volunteer some time in the school if I come, say, in September? Who can I contact at the school to discuss this? Can I have mail forwarded to me there? Is there Internet access? Please email me if you can help with any of these questions!

Thank you. Randi Stein

Folks -- I know there has been some talk of exploring high-speed internet access for Islesford. I just saw a news item about Chebeague Island's efforts in this area. Here is a link to the news coverage:
http://www.wcsh6.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=40462
The IP address of the island's site is www.chebeague.net
The stakes are particularly high for year-round island communities that must continue to attract and retain residents, many of whom may seek the island lifestyle but need high-speed access to support web-based businesses.
Good luck! The 21st Century awaits!
